Hotels use different types of energy sources to fulfill their daily needs, among them :
- Electricity for lighting, cooling, heating and operation of various electrical devices;
- Fossil fuel/oil for space heating and hot water production;
- LPG liquid petroleum gas /gas for heating and cooking;
- Solar energy for hot water production.
The table below shows us the annual energy consumption per source in five Cretan hotels. According to the data provided, it can be seen that they mostly use electricity as a source of energy, which in some hotels peaks to 84% of the total energy consumption. The second most used source in fossil fuel is diesel oil. 3 out of the 5 hotels used renewable energy (usually solar) until a maximum of 16% of the consumption fo one of them.
